A big-rig truck spilled 15 tons of garlic along Highway 129 near Watsonville early this morning after the driver lost control, obstructing traffic for a few hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The lone driver was traveling at an unsafe speed from Gilroy to Watsonville and did not sustain any injuries, CHP Office Supervisor Trevor Wilson said. No motorists were injured either, but drivers had to wait a few hours after the 7:45 a.m. accident while Caltrans crews cleaned up splintered pallets and the shallow sea of garlic bulbs covering Rogge Lane. The road was clear by 2 p.m.
A truck dispatcher at Christopher Ranch, the local garlic-producing patriarch, would not say whether the big rig departed from the warehouse here this morning. He referred questions to owner Bill Christopher, who was in a meeting and unavailable this afternoon.
