Can you imagine your first day in high school: the day that could make or break your social life for the next four years. Think of the girl who walks out of the bathroom with a string of fresh toilet paper streaming from her foot.
There are plenty of fears a normal teenager has to face: Fitting in, wearing the trendiest fashions, and sporting the newest trends sports companies have to offer. I’m not saying these are bad ideas, but they do become a source of pressure on a teen just entering high school.
What about the hopes a teen will have in the four years of high school? Think of the opportunities you will have, and the friends you will make. High school becomes a time to cherish.
The first years of high school are very important – the choices you make, and the courses you take, all lead to a future you create. The wrong choices can lead to extra work or bad experiences, whereas the good choices may lead to finishing school at the top of your class or even fulfilling a life-long dream.
As an incoming freshman at Ann Sobrato High, I know the choices I make will depend on my feelings. Going into high school, will I carry the burden of my fears or overcome them to achieve my hopes?
Personally, my biggest fears are peer pressure, the changes in the environment and the thought of possibly making bad choices. I feel that starting high school is leaving the comfort zone that middle school offers. Another fear is not being accepted. Am I going to be there to witness all the great adventures or will they all pass me by? I am also fearful of being overwhelmed with responsibility.
Now, that I know my fears, what about my hopes? At least in high school you get away from the routine life of middle school. In middle school, things happen the same way each year. Once in high school, I hope there will be many adventures. I hope to meet new people who stand out and are different. A personal hope to have is to be come more outgoing in class and not be so unsure of myself.
Some other great opportunities in high school are clubs and sports. There are so many clubs and sports to choose from and the option to start your own club.
Another freshman was happy to share her hopes and fears. Katrina Olson, of Morgan Hill, also an incoming freshman at Ann Sobrato High, said, “I have fears of meeting new kids from different schools, as well as the teachers.”
As for hopes she said “I would like to meet new people, but my old friends are just fine.”
Teens are surrounded by peer pressure, and in order to fit in, some may change their personalities.
“Yeah, I think I will change but not from peer pressure,” Katrina said. “I will have the experience of being in high school. I will probably make new friends.”
The jump from middle school to high school has some major differences.
“Some people won’t be there, like my good friend Katie Rule, and the school work would get tough and now I will need to think.” That makes all of us!
Now, what does the average incoming freshman guy think?
Emi Mendez, of Hollister, who will be attending San Benito High, and who seems comfortable with the change.
For Emi, when asked if he had any fears, he simply said, “No I don’t.”
His biggest hope as a freshman is, “to get good grades.”
When asked if guys change when entering high school, Emi said, “I don’t think so.”
He also said he doesn’t think there will be any major differences between middle school and high school.
Although, the thought of only four years before college starts, flashes through my mind, I should remember there is time to cherish in high school. What about attending football games with your friends, homecoming, senior prank, bad school photos, and graduation?
I know I have a lot to look forward to in high school.
Good luck, freshmen!
