Rush hour traffic crawled for more than a mile on eastbound Highway 152 between Frazier Lake and Cañada roads as motorists gawked at an accident between a bus and a large horse trailer.
Three fire engines, four ambulances and several California Highway Patrol vehicles responded to the call that came in at 2:15 p.m., Gilroy Fire Department Battalion Chief Clay Bentson said.
Emergency response personnel were already headed out that way to respond to an accident involving two sport utility vehicles. One of the SUVs was pulling off Cañada Road and was sideswiped by the other faster moving SUV. No major injuries resulted, Bentson said.
The second accident happened less than a mile away near a fruit stand near the intersection of Ferguson Road and Highway 152.
“The second accident threw me,” Bentson said. “We rounded the curb and were flagged over to the other accident, so there was a little confusion.”
A small bus carrying eight special needs adults sideswiped an empty horse trailer when the trailer tried pulling onto the road. The right-hand windows of the bus were broken, resulting in minor injuries from the flying glass, Bentson said.
“There were cuts and bleeding from the flying glass more than anything else,” he said. “But it could have been a whole lot worse.”
The eight passengers were transported to a local hospital.
