Morgan Hill – Sheriff’s deputies and Morgan Hill police were busy Wednesday and Thursday, busting up a meth lab on Croy Road and handling a string of burglaries in the city center.
The methamphetamine lab was discovered Wednesday afternoon when Sheriff’s deputies conducted a probation search at a motor home at 6760 Croy Road in the hills west of the city.
Denny Holderfield, 40, and his brother James, 24, both of Morgan Hill, were arrested on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and a marijuana plant. They were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. Further charges may be filed, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Detective Julian Quinonez said deputies made the visit on a hunch.
“We saw when they were arrested back in January for possession of stolen property that burglaries in the area went down,” Quinonez said. “When burglaries increased again we checked to see who was in and who was out of jail. Most of them were still in jail except for the Holderfields, so we went to check.”
When officers entered the motor home they found waste products from drug manufacturing, possible finished product and equipment. The state Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement was notified and removed the chemicals.
Closer to home, seven businesses, including The Morgan Hill Times, were burglarized Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, possibly by a group of juveniles, said Lt. Joe Sampson. In addition to
The Times, Taco Bell, Accutune, Trail Dust, the barber shop in Albertson’s Center, Elegant Stone on Mast (near the new police department on Vineyard Avenue) and Enterprise Car Rental were also hit.
“They took loose cash from some of the cash registers and drawers, tried to break into a Coke machine – all signs of juvenile burglars,” Sampson said.
Sampson said the department is putting together a strategy to deal with “this little group.”
About the same time last year similar rash of burglaries occurred downtown, Sampson. They arrested a couple of juveniles and sent them to Juvenile Hall. Sampson said they were checking to see if they are still there.
