Hemming and a hawing over the URM buildings downtown is over

One of our Community Pulse Board members said it very well responding to the question “Do you agree with the City Council's decision Monday to place liens against unreinforced masonry downtown properties that have not been brought up to safety standards?” She wrote, “Yes, the time has come to get this issue resolved. Many of the building owners have been non-responsive and not cooperative. I would like to see a low interest loan option available  to those who want to repair their buildings.” In chewing on this issue and watching a downtown stuck in a yukky time warp for 25 years, I have vacillated on the approach. But I’ve come around to Mayor Don Gage’s way of thinking and agree with the Council’s action. If the building owners want to demolish, so be it. Let them cut off their noses to spite their faces. They’d better keep those empty lots pristine, though, or they could be declared a public nuisance and, by the way, perhaps there are additional standards of upkeep for downtown properties that could be developed which include empty lots and the alleys behind them. If an entire rebuild with historical sensibility needs to be the way something gets done, OK. But Gage is right, the pile has to move.

Home run with the ’56 Corvette

I certainly hope you enjoyed all of the great Morgan Hill Independence Day festivities. I know Lady M and I did. The music, the races, the martinis – oops. And of particular fun was the parade on the Fourth. You see, that was the coming out party for the latest edition to the Miller family. It was the first time that our ’56 Corvette, “Beauty,” was on display for all to see. And I not only got to drive the parade route during the Classic Car Cruise with our friend, Jim, but I chauffeured another friend, Santa Clara Valley Water District board member and former mayor Dennis Kennedy, in the parade. What a kick.

Easy does it

Yesterday, my marathon training plan listed: "5 miles, easy." If you are actually following a specific plan for a race of any distance, it helps to understand the terms that are used. Nearly every race plan includes "easy" days, but what exactly does that mean? Easy is not specific at all--it is the opposite of "hard"--I know that much. But how easy is easy? What does "easy" mean for me? It's obvious that easy days alternate with "hard" days, so it's plain to see that this easy-hard pattern is meant to keep runners from turning every workout into a Hard Day.

It’s not all about the money

When meeting with a financial advisor, the purpose for the appointment will somehow revolve around money; you need help with a 401(k) rollover or advice on how to start a retirement plan for your business, you want to set up a program to save for your kid's college educations, you have received an inheritance or maybe you just want to get in on the latest IPO stock coming out of the Silicon Valley. That said, whatever prompted the appointment, it's not all about the money.

SWC brings music, religion to Laguna Seca

It's time for Spirit West Coast, the popular Christian Music Festival that will be held at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area near Monterey Aug. 1-3. This is the 16th year for the event, which typically draws crowds of 20,000 visitors over the three days of its performances, making it “the most successful Christian music event in the (southern) West Coast region.” Besides music by top artists in the field of Christian music, the festival features Bible teachings by gifted speakers and other activities for all ages - supported by more than 900 volunteers who donate their time to provide security, concessions, ministry, traffic control, ushering and many other services required to meet the needs of such a large crowd.

‘Oliver’: Heart-wrenching and sentimental

When Charles Dickens wrote “Oliver Twist,” a heart wrenching/sentimental story about the poor and the mistreatment of children in the early 1800s, I imagine the last thing on his mind was a musical about his hero's journey from orphan to finding his upper class family.

Vaccination can lessen severity of rattler bite

Q: Our neighbor told me that his dog has been vaccinated to protect against the poisonous venom of rattlesnakes. Is there really a vaccine for this?

Summer of doom: Murder in the microwave

It occurred to me that while everyone I know is off enjoying summer holiday vacations – cruises, climbing “Fourteeners” in Colorado, jetting off to Europe – I’m living vicariously through others and should probably use this time to do something noteworthy, such as write a novel. Because I’ve realized that, behold! Right here in my very own home await countless mysterious adventures.

Why you get tired from bad food

I have been trying to understand insulin resistance for quite a while. All i read gave some clues but no real understanding. Lately I have been following a blog (hyperlipid) which i very detailed about it and one of the latests posts there seem to give an answer. It would seem that overloading your cells with glucose actually make them cut down on the number of mitochondria. That cant be good. And it might explain why i always seemed to get tired for no reason until i changed my diet.  More later
