Thank you!
Apropos of Thanksgiving and their namesakes, Turkey Vultures are a very social and family-oriented bird, gathering together to share a meal (which doesn’t include pumpkin pie—WERC’s educational vulture Zorro, above, is just checking out whether the squash makes a suitable perch).
Getting down to what really matters – the roaster
I’ve been thinking about this column ever since my father died in 1998 and my sister, brothers and I went through the house and made “our picks” of the things we wanted to keep.
Keep Memorial Day Weekend Simple with Hamburgers, Hot Dogs
Next weekend commemorates another Memorial Day. It is the official "kickoff" to many seasons. Memorial Day weekend is the official start of the summer driving season, outdoor festival season and, of course, grilling and barbecue season. We must also remember that Memorial Day weekend holds more important meaning than the things I just mentioned.

A visit into intensity with music
THE show “Next To Normal” brought lyricist Brian Yorkey the 2009 Tony Award for Best Score and Tom Kitt two Tony’s for Best New Score and Best Orchestration. Both won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for “Next To Normal,” rare for a musical
Red Phone: Smoking within city limits
"I just finished reading the article in the Dispatch regarding the cigarette smoke. Our house is located next to a mutli-unit dwelling and a church. What has occurred here is everyone is outside smoking and they are out in front of our house. We are sandwiched in between. They leave their cigarettes around. All these people are outside smoking right in front of our house. I have a mother who is on oxygen. And there isn't supposed to be any smoking around this area. I don't know if that law applies to them. Does it also apply to the church and their congregation? Who do I call in response to them smoking?"
Say thanks to a veteran and remember that in Gilroy we’re all ‘blue’ fans
This time each year a convergence of sorts happens: practicing random acts of kindness and Veterans Day which is Monday, Nov. 11. It reminds me that as Americans we have the opportunity to deliver random acts of kindness because of the noble sacrifices made by those who have or are serving in the armed forces. They have delivered us our freedoms. When you see a soldier or a veteran, thank them for their great service. Buy them a cup of coffee, breakfast or a beer in the airport if the opportunity arises. And remember, those random acts of kindness. They’re good karma, and they will come back to you.
‘Oliver’: Heart-wrenching and sentimental
When Charles Dickens wrote “Oliver Twist,” a heart wrenching/sentimental story about the poor and the mistreatment of children in the early 1800s, I imagine the last thing on his mind was a musical about his hero's journey from orphan to finding his upper class family.
Kirby and No-no Lulu: The ‘hounds from hell’
Kirby and No-no Lulu look calm and innocent - but in reality they are just taking a well-deserved break from their full-time job as the neighborhood hounds from hell. This job includes barking at anything that moves (from tree leaves to the tiny white dog down the street whom they both hate for reasons which are not known to me), stealing the left shoe from every pair I own, eating the teenager’s socks, sitting on the living room furniture when nobody is home and attacking the TV when a dog comes on. In their off time they enjoy sitting on that couch, which is fairly new since No-no Lulu ate the last one.
Two cathedrals: A saint and a king
Two news stories caught my attention recently: one local, one far away. Both seem to say something about history's impact on the present.
