‘Water By The Spoonful’: Deep, intertwined theater

“Water By The Spoonful” is the second part of a trilogy by Quiara Alegria Hudes that won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for drama. It straddles and intertwines two story lines: one about a wounded Iraq war veteran struggling mentally with what happened during his tour of duty, the loss of a loved one and his interactions with family and drugs. The second thread of the plot involves a group of deeply flawed characters, each with a load of personal baggage, involved in an online chatroom where they try and help each other over the difficult road to staying off crack.

‘The Secret Garden’: A delightful experience

The musical "The Secret Garden" is based on the novel by Frances

Does American culture encourage crime?

I have often wondered, does American culture encourage crime?

Red Phone: People need to slow down

"They need to put a four-way stop on that corner by the Veteran's building, where the Farmers' Market is especially since they are doing the work on that area any way. There are four-way stops all the way down Sixth Street so one more won't matter. Also on Santa Theresa Drive and Third Street by El Roble School they need to put one. You ought to be out there when school gets out. People don't slow down. Sometimes when they hit Miller Avenue, they are doing 90 miles an hour it seems like. They need four-way stops at those two places."

Frys.com Open a success even before it began

To say the Frys.com Open was a rousing success last week, with Tiger Woods playing in front of a packed crowd down the street at CordeValle Golf Club, and Bryce Molder and Briny Baird exchanging paper cuts in a riveting six-hole, sudden-death playoff Sunday, would be inaccurate.

Red Phone: Trash drop-off rates vary

"I want to complain about the transfer station rates at Recology. For the last two years since I've been using the transfer station location I have never been charged any more than $25 for a load in my mini truck. Earlier this month I was charged $42.50 for a load that was generally smaller than most of my loads. This was yard cuttings, wood and cardboard. This charge was 75 percent more. It is unreasonable. I usually do the right thing by layering and going to each station so that the facility can efficiently handle my debris."

Getting Out: John Muir Laws

I began writing this column nearly five years ago. Since then, when I meet someone new, while we are shaking hands, they sometimes say, "Oh, you're the guy who likes to hike." I smile and nod in agreement, but in the back of my mind, I realize that's not quite true.

‘Beauty And The Beast’: Delightfully enchanting

“Beauty and the Beast” is a delightful presentation. Everyone knows the engaging tale: Belle finds herself in an enchanted castle where the Beast and all the inhabitants are trapped in an animated state because of a witch’s cruel curse that only Belle can break. And as in all fairytales, everyone lives happily ever after. But getting there is delightful fun.
