The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
JEERS: For the 13-year-old who fired a pellet gun at Gilroy High students Wednesday morning. The apparent lack of understanding about the seriousness of such an attack is unfathomable, and an unnerving not-so-subtle reminder about the precarious nature of safety in our society today. What can we do? Keep pounding home the message that violence is not the way to solve personal conflicts, insist that our children treat others with respect and appropriately punish those who insist on violent behavior.
CHEERS: For all those who festively decorate their homes and businesses thereby sharing the holiday spirit with fellow Gilroyans. A map on today’s back page details the entries in this year’s Chamber/SC Realtors contest. Pack the children in the car and take a fun tour. Carolyn Silva’s home at Fifth and Hanna streets won this year, so you might want to save that stop for last.
CHEERS: For Santa Clara County supervisors who approved a common-sense policy for Croy Fire victims. Residents who were living in illegal structures won’t have to pay fines, just regular fees, if they want to rebuild. That’s the right approach.
