The Gilroy High girls varsity volleyball team took the court for the first time this weekend and went 3-3 at the two-day Bruin Classic.

The Mustangs went 3-1 on Friday and entered play Saturday as the No. 1-seed out of their pool. Gilroy went on to lose a close two-set match (26-24, 25-23) to Lincoln and a tight 2-1 match to Santa Clara, a team it had defeated twice Friday.

“The girls played great,” first year coach Kassi Swalboski wrote in an email. “It was so fun to see them playing as a team, and playing extremely well against hard teams. I’m looking forward to this season and I’m pretty sure this gave the girls the boost of confidence that they needed. Now they know they can win. They just have to get out there and do it.”
