Dear Editor,
As a Gilroy native now living out of state, I want to thank you for the compassionate coverage your paper has given the Ailes family during this difficult time.
As everyone knows in Gilroy, the expression “heard it through the grapevine” is an understatement. I received a phone call Tuesday night informing me that our community had lost a soldier. As a reporter near Fort Campbell, Ky., I speak with soldiers on a daily basis who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan, and I have also been embedded on practice urban warfare missions. Every time I hear a story of someone not making it home, or being wounded, I’m troubled. But hearing that this war has touched home, the town where everyone knows you whether you like it or not, and the place where you’ll find some of the best people in the world, I was crushed.
Since Tuesday, I have been glued to your Web site, hoping for some sense of home, wishing I could be there.
I did not know Jeramy Ailes personally, but as the girlfriend of a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force, having a loved one in a war zone is not only familiar to me – it’s inevitable.
I just wanted to let the Ailes family know that people all over this country are praying for their peace of mind, and for the safe return of all our armed forces. Jeramy is a hero, and we should all be extremely grateful for what he has done for this nation.
