“June” rhymes with “gloom,” and that’s exactly what Friday and Saturday could bring according to the National Weather Service, which is predicting a downpour of one to two inches of rain this weekend in the Bay Area.

Precipitation could appear around 6 p.m. this evening and last into early Sunday morning before tapering off, says NWS meteorologist Larry Smith, who alluded to these patterns as being abnormal for this time of year. He confirmed the highest chances of rain are tonight and Saturday night before things dry up around Tuesday.

“It’s a tough call in Gilroy, though,” he added, explaining a low cutoff pressures system will be hanging out along the coastline and hit the Santa Cruz Mountains the hardest.

“I don’t know what kind of an impact is has for the cherry growers, but I know some of the wine guys might be nervous about mold and stuff,” he said.

The latest hazardous weather outlook from the NWS highlights an “unseasonably strong storm” that will approach Northern California by this afternoon. Motorists should prepare for a wet Friday afternoon and evening commute as the rain may become heavy, according to the NWS.

The outlook shows steady rain tapering into showers by Saturday afternoon and evening, however the system will then move inland on Sunday with renewed shower and thunderstorm chances. Should heavier rain develop, local urban and small stream flooding will be possible Saturday through Sunday, according to the NWS.

The weather service says dry weather will return Monday afternoon through Thursday with temperatures near or slightly below normal.
