DEAR EDITOR:

Are you tired of teenage “hooligans” vandalizing and making a ruckus at night? Are you worried about your teenager’s activities on the weekends? Would you like to know that they are safe where ever they are? Well, I am a teenager in Gilroy and I would like to see something done to give a safe haven to teens so they can go there to stay out of trouble on the weekends – a place where high school students could go to socialize, hang out with friends and just have a good time.

Not much is being done to ensure that teens have something to do on the weekends. There are a few places we adolescents can go, but going to see a movie or out to eat gets pretty tiresome after about three times.

Let’s see here, Platinum Movie Theaters, The Gaslighter, your friend’s house, the skate park … and that’s just about it. I remember in junior high school everyone went to the movies for a social thing to do. It was where all your friends were going to be, and it was the thing to do. I have gotten over that now that I can drive myself there. Also the skatepark can only be useful to kids who skateboard, not even kids who ride bikes can use it anymore. So that narrows it down to the Gaslighter (which I would only go to on Saturday for rock concerts) and going to parties and cruising in someone’s car.

The problem with cruising is that you can risk getting pulled over or getting into an accident, besides it’s not that fun and you just waste gas, in turn polluting the air, so my friends and I usually find something else to do. And with parties you just can’t win. Drinking and drugs are the popular things to do at parties so steering clear of parties all together is a good way to avoid peer pressure. However, a commonly known fact: kids that have nothing to do must find something or else they will explode.

Well I don’t know about you, but I hope someone can help the teens in Gilroy find something to do so that the teenage crime rate in Gilroy will go down. How about a center or facility where teens can go to eat, play games, socialize, hang out and safely have a good time? Sounds good to me.

I think what the teenagers in Gilroy need is this teen center. It would be fun safe and reliable. I think it would bring down the necessary police enforcement of underage drinking and breaking up parties, and it would assure parents that their children are safe. Most of all it would provide teens with a place to go on a Saturday night that would always be open to all kids in desperate need of something to do.
