An unknown woman fired a handgun at a woman who was getting out of her car near her home in east Gilroy, but nobody was injured, police said.

The 25-year-old victim parked her car near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Ghirlanda Court near San Ysidro Park about 11:08 p.m. Sunday when the female suspect pulled up about four feet away in a 1996 brown Lexus sedan, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. The suspect yelled profanities, asked the victim what she was doing in the neighborhood, challenged her to a fight and then fired one shot from an unspecified caliber handgun toward the victim, who ran away without injury before calling police.

To fire her weapon, the assailant leaned over a male passenger, who police believe to be a 28-year-old Hispanic male officers have contacted before, Gillio said. Police were unable to locate a casing in the area and are searching for both suspects. The Anti-Crime Team is also investigating the incident to determine if it is gang-related, Gillio said.

Police declined to describe the relationship between the victim and suspect, who faces arrest for assault with a deadly weapon, specifically a handgun, which carries up to four years in prison, according to the state penal code.
