Jasmine Yanez, a GHS junior, will represent U.S. at Cadet Pan
American Championships in July,
GILROY – Jasmine Yanez’s resume is growing quicker than she is.
A list of accomplishments from this year alone include: a Central Coast Section girls’ championship, a girls’ state championship, first at the NorCal Regionals, first at the Napa Valley Classic and a silver medal at the Cadet Pan American Championships in Nicaragua last summer.
Time to take a breath.
The two-time all-american junior from Gilroy High School added another entry to her exhausting list last Saturday, placing first in the 108-pound Cadet division of the Fila Cadet Women’s Freestyle National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida. Yanez defeated Hanna Grisewood out of New York in overtime to grab the title.
“It was probably one of the harder matches I’ve had,” Yanez said, “but I just showed a lot of composure and heart. You have to do that to compete against the best.”
With the gold medal, Yanez will make a return trip to the Cadet Pan American Championships, representing the United States in the 108-pound weight class in July in Brazil.
“I see it as another way to explore the world doing what I love to do,” Yanez added.
There are no sponsors for the tournament so Yanez must raise the money for the trip on her own.
“I’m not quite sure yet how I’m going to fund raise,” she said. “I know I will get a lot of help from friends and family who pitch in money.”
