Jasmine Yanez capped her illustrious prep career with a state title at the inaugural California Interscholastic Federation State Girls Wrestling Invitational.
The Gilroy High senior went 4-0 at the two-day event held at Lemoore High School over the weekend.
According to a release sent out by the CIF, 336 wrestlers representing 10 sections from across the state participated in the tournament in front of 977 fans on friday and 1,032 on Saturday.
Ranked No. 1 in the state at 108 pounds, Yanez defeated Gabrielle Eslinger of Lincoln in the finals.
Yanez breezed through her first two matches Friday afternoon, knocking off Elleni Ortega by technical fall 15-0 and Brianna Garcia via pin 52 seconds into the bout. She met a familiar face in Amy Fearnside of Live Oak in the semifinals. The two tangled at the Central Coast Section Championships earlier in the month, Yanez, like before, gained the upper hand to advance to the championship.
Yanez is a two-time section champion and also won a state crown last season at what was called the California Girls Invitational, the default state tournament prior to the CIF sanctioning girls wrestling this season.
