Dear Editor,

Shocked? Why?

The recent “revelations” that cheating may be rampant at Gilroy High are not surprising. What is surprising is the response of our superintendent who didn’t seem to know that cheating was prevalent and wasn’t sure how to address it. We pay big bucks for a superintendent and principal to be on top of the teaching and learning in our schools. Generally they have done well, but I’m disappointed in this response.

This is not a simple problem of a moral lapse. It brings the major question of discrediting the entire school progress evaluation program. We get detailed statistics on the progress of the schools only to find out now that this may be based on results derived from how well the students can cheat the tests. Worse, the administration has a vested interest in showing improvement and perhaps turning a blind eye to the means of achieving these statistics.

Thank the voters for Rhoda Bress who now has demonstrated the confidence we placed in her.

Why not – IMMEDIATELY – ban cell phones from being outside of backpacks during any test or even in any classroom? In fact, why not place backpacks in the back of the room to be picked up after the test. Initiate a zero tolerance for cheating. We already have zero tolerance for many other things. Yes, establish an honor code. If the student’s haven’t learned some morals at home, the school should at least expose them to what is right and wrong. They will need to learn this now or suffer the consequences in later life.

It looks like Gilroy High is going to get an attitude adjustment.
