Gilroy – Former Gavilan and San Benito Junior colleges students and staff members are invited to attend an alumni mixer from 6 to 8pm Jan. 20 in the adaptive physical education building at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Alumni will receive free admission to two basketball games taking place that evening. Women’s basketball will begin at 5:30pm, with the Gavilan Rams pitted against the College of San Mateo. Men’s basketball will begin at 7:30pm, against Hartnell College.

Past issues of The Gavilan Rambler and other memorabilia, will be on hand. Alumni will also have the opportunity to join the Alumni Registry, learn about volunteer opportunities and meet other alumni who are interested in forming an alumni association, during the mixer.

Since 1919 more than 100,000 people in the community have attended Gavilan College or the former San Benito Junior College, according to Jan Bernstein Chargin, Gavilan public information officer.

Deadline for ACT nears

Gilroy – College-bound high school students have until Friday to register to take the ACT exam on the next nationwide test date Feb. 11.

Students who miss the Friday postmark deadline can do late registration through Jan. 20 for an additional $18 fee. Normal cost of the ACT is $29 (the cost is $43 if students choose to take the optional Writing Test).

Community blood drive

Gilroy – The next community blood drive will be held Thursday, Jan. 12, from 1:30 to 6:30pm at the First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

Auditions for ‘Narnia’

Gilroy – The South Valley Civic Theatre is holding auditions for its young performers production of Narnia Jan. 13 at 7pm and Jan. 14 at 9am and 1pm.

School-aged children in grades two through eight may audition. The director is also looking to fill two adult roles – adult female, mezzo soprano, for the part of the White Witch and an adult male, tenor-baritone, for the part of Aslan (the lion).

Auditions will be held in the Gilroy High School choir room located directly across the walkway from the Gilroy High School theater’s main entrance.

Actors should arrive 30 minutes prior to audition to register and be prepared with a song and a copy of the sheet music (an accompanist will be provided). Performances will be held in March at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse.

Surprise for the troops

Gilroy – Please join the Gilroy Seniors for a January “Sweetheart Surprise” Operation Interdependence Pack-In sending Valentines’ Day Cards to the Troops on Jan. 14 at the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room, 7351 Rosanna St. from noon to 2pm or 3 to 5pm. People can stop by for 15 minutes and write a letter or stay for two hours and pack.

Winter waterfowl paddle

Gilroy – On Saturday, Jan. 20, at 9am, bring a kayak or canoe for a peaceful morning paddle on the waters of Coyote Lake in search of winter waterfowl. Bring binoculars, a life jacket, warm clothing and water. A snack will be provided. There is a $5 per vehicle park entrance fee, but the program is free. Meet at the Coyote Lake launch area, 10840 Coyote Lake Road.
