Dear Editor,
This is in response to the Red Phone call regarding the firefighters shopping in the grocery stores.
To those that do not understand, a firefighter is a human being with the same bodily functions as you have. We must eat and excrete (although we may have to hold it much longer than you can if summoned to a call in the middle of the night or any other time of the day including birthdays, Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, our family’s funerals, etc., etc., etc.!). One of the things that we do is make ourselves available to the public! That can be done by shopping in the same places that you do!
We do not get our meals served to us! No one makes our beds or does our laundry or cleans our house! We do that, like most people should, then we go home to our family and do the same thing. And it may be days after the holidays or the birthdays or the funerals of family! That’s not fun! It would be nice to know that the people we helped really care about what we do.
I’m not asking for a raise for the firefighters, I want respect for what we have done.
When you think of having to wake up to a call on Christmas morning and find an infant dead in their crib and having to counsel the family, or go to an auto accident where an aunt, uncle and mother were going to visit their family for Thanksgiving and were crushed and dead in a car that had to be cut apart to get them out or deal with families and seniors that have fires destroy their homes, then you can call me and complain!
Sign me “retired after 34 years of fire
service.”
