Dear Editor:

I am asking the community for support for the children involved in the Elementary School Safety Patrol Program. These fifth- and sixth-grade students provide safe crossings for all elementary school children. They are subjected daily to confusing traffic conditions surrounding our schools while maintaining discipline and order to the children they cross. Their job involves leadership, citizenship, and responsibility, and is a valuable contribution to the safety of all elementary school children and to the community as a whole.

These young people deserve a major “Thank You” for the work they have done throughout the school year. You can help provide this “Thank You” by donating to their annual Raging Waters Trip. This trip is designed to reward the school safety patrol members for all their hard work. These young people have shown a willingness to assume a responsibility for their school mates. Please, let us show them our support and recognition through our donations.

This year we are attempting to provide the field trip for approximately 300 students. The cost for this trip is about $5,000. A donation in the amount of $100 would help provide this day of fun for some truly deserving children. If this amount is beyond your ability or you are able to donate more than that amount to help us reach our goal, than any amount you find appropriate will be greatly appreciated.

All donations should be made to “Student Safety Patrol Program” and mailed to the Gilroy Police Department, 7370 Rosanna St., Gilroy, CA 95020. These funds must be raised by May 15. Thank you for your consideration and support of these deserving students.

Sgt. Daniel Castaneda, Gilroy Safety Patrol Coordinator
