DEAR EDITOR:

In her zeal to condemn Wal-Mart’s presence in Gilroy, Ms. Carol Mancera’s letter of Feb. 25 seems to equate such a presence in itself with the actions of a Mr. Hyde-type monster running amuck in our “beautiful town” causing great damage.

Well Ms. Mancera, to be fair about it and logical as well, how about including in your condemnation other local “monsters” (her word) such as Costco, Lowe’s, Home Depot, OSH and of course, the octopus of outlet stores on our east side. Why isn’t the presence of these corporate stores just as bad? Ms. Mancera fails to show how keeping Wal-Mart from expanding is going to “save our city.” Save it from what?

If Gilroy needs saving as she claims, maybe she should be up-in-arms about the corporate “monsters” that are already here, or else focus her attention on the redevelopment of our historic weather-beaten downtown district.
