GILROY – Gilroy police engaged in a car and foot chase through the Eighth and Dowdy streets area Tuesday morning trying to catch a car thief who eventually got away.

Police closed Dowdy and Hanna streets between Seventh and Eighth streets for approximately 45 minutes Tuesday morning while they searched alleys and backyards in the area for the suspect. Although he wasn’t apprehended Tuesday, police believe they know the suspect, but will not release any more information until an investigation is complete. Police believe the suspect has left the area.

The chase began when an officer attempted to pull over a late-model Honda that was reported as stolen from San Jose. The suspect in the Honda continued to drive for a short time before stopping the car in the middle of the road on Eighth Street and fleeing on foot north through the alley on the west side of Dowdy, possibly jumping fences, according to police.

If caught the suspect could be charged with a felony for evading police and for auto theft.
