Five hundred and three acres of wildland will be intentionally set ablaze Wednesday and Thursday on the Blue Oak Ranch Reserve in the Mt. Hamilton foothills, northeast of Gilroy.
With favorable weather conditions forecast, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District gave Cal Fire permission to conduct the prescribed burn to protect against large, damaging fires, enhance wildlife habitats and improve local watersheds, according to Chris Morgan, Cal Fire fire prevention specialist.
About three acres will be burned Wednesday, and an additional 500 will be burned Thursday. Smoke should be visible to most areas of the county.
The Blue Oak Reserve is located north of Joseph Grant County Park, about five miles east of San Jose, and is owned by the University of California, Berkeley.
