Dear Editor,

My daughter Melissa attends Gateway School here in Gilroy. Gateway is a very small school for severely handicapped children, both physically and mentally. Gateway is currently having some remodeling done and Melissa’s class is temporarily at Eliot School.

I have visited Eliot several times in the last month since they have been there and must say that I have been very moved by the compassion the Eliot children have shown toward our Gateway students. During recess, I observed each of our students surrounded by a group of Eliot children smiling and talking to them. It was like our kids were rock stars and they were surrounded by their fans. The Eliot students also volunteer to be helpers in our classroom. What a wonderful experience for all the children.

Thank you to the Eliot School principal, the Eliot teachers, but most of all the Eliot School students who have treated our Gateway students with dignity and respect. I hope the teachers will pass my appreciation on to these fine students. Have a great summer!
