Fayette, Iowa – Two Gilroy products recently completed their seasons with the Upper Iowa University baseball team.
Senior outfielder Scott Perkins, a Gilroy High graduate, appeared in 39 games for the Peacocks, making 38 starts. He led the team with a .354 batting average, collecting 45 hits, including seven doubles, two triples and three home runs. Perkins drove in 26 runs and scored 24, with 13 multi-hit games, including four three-hit games and one four-hit performance. He drove in five runs in two different games and even pitched an inning for UIU, striking out two without allowing an earned run.
In his two years with the Peacocks, Perkins batted .338 with nine homers and 46 RBI in 68 games.
Shannon Fernandez, a Gilroy native who attended Mohave HS in Bullhead City, Ariz., also contributed to the Peacocks. The junior outfielder appeared in 35 games, making 34 starts. He batted .243 with 27 hits, including four doubles. Fernandez scored 23 runs and knocked in 14. Fernandez had six multi-hit games, including a three-hit contest vs. Oakland City University on March 6.
Upper Iowa finished the season with a 13-34 record while playing its first NCAA Division II schedule.
