DEAR EDITOR:
I do not agree with Mr. Mark Zappa’s letter published Monday which denounced the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for passing a “war as a last resort” resolution. Their action certainly was not absurd nor a discredit to their office.
The issue of going to war with Iraq is so serious that it demands that all citizens and all levels of political leadership take a position.
The complaint that such a resolution is out of bounds for the supervisors because it has nothing to do with the county and distracts them from local concerns and tasks is disingenuous. Even now, the talk of war is directly effecting Santa Clara County – military personnel are being called up for deployment overseas, our local economy is in the doldrums because of the anxiety over possible war, the military options and the rebuilding of Iraq will have huge long term costs, the threats to our homeland security, and terrorists alerts are all in play.
Indifference, apathy, and silence do not promote or preserve our freedoms either in our community or around the world. Individual citizens and our local political leaders have the right and the responsibility to voice their opinion.
It is moral decision time. The ramifications of war will be of consequence to all Americans. We cannot afford to insulate ourselves behind the purview that this issue does not relate to us.
I commend the Board of Supervisors for their fortitude. Now I hope and pray that the United Nations will demonstrate a unified resolve to handle the Iraq situation in a way that will spare the world the carnage of war.
