GILROY—As Bert Mar walked the grounds at South Valley Middle School, he was met with big smiles and warm greetings at every turn. Cars that whizzed by the school turned around when they saw him, the drivers eager to say hello. Mar recognized each instantly and answered them with a bright smile, a wave and a unique nickname he’d undoubtedly given them several years ago. He’s a familiar face in Gilroy—and for good reason.

Eevery weekday morning before the official start of school, 26 students at South Valley Middle School in Gilroy take extra time to make sure their shirts are tucked in, their belts are adjusted, and their sweaters are straightened. Why? Because they know their teacher, Carmen Kotto, expects the best from them.

• No. I’m certain GPD is aware of the probable times and location park crimes are likely to occur.  Occasional, unpredictable patrols should suffice.  I am just as certain prioritizing GPD efforts in one problem area will cause neglect in other problem areas.  The GPD knows what they're doing.  Let's not make this a reactionary public issue or political issue.

1. Squabbling has continued for more than six months

Eerie chills travel up my spine as the crypt door slowly opens. Nevermind that the sound is being made by the creaky handle of a paper cutter. I shiver with the effects of the curse that has haunted the mansion of the Rochambeau family for 90 years!

To squelch youth crime in Gilroy, community leaders are seeking input from residents about the types of crime juveniles are getting into in their neighborhoods, and what can be done about the problem.  

Last fall, Gilroy Police wrapped up the 39-agency, 16-month undercover sting known as Operation Garlic Press that culminated with a four-day arrest blitz of 118 suspects – and one year later, police say Gilroy streets are safer.

At 7:38 p.m. on July 29, a 25-year-old male was walking in the soccer field behind South Valley Middle School when two unknown suspects allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver, causing non-life threatening injuries.

After months of debate between City Council and the Gilroy Unified School District, Council plans to explore the possibility of taking ownership of the swimming pool at South Valley Middle School during their regular meeting on Monday.

More than 60 people showered City Council with pleas to keep the pool at South Valley Middle School open during their regular meeting Monday night.
