Dear Editor,

This letter is inspired by Stephanie Eliason’s letter “Enjoy a party, support youth building homes for the poor in Mexico.” (By the way, I’ll be at the party)

I agree wholeheartedly in teaching our youth to help those in need and for giving them a front row seat to poverty. It’s good for kids to see real life without cell phones, CD players and the thankless thermostat on the wall adjusted to a perfect comfort level.

Nothing but good can come of this kind of reality check. Good for the giver, good for the recipient and good for the parent who encourages this kind of generosity.

However, not everyone has the ability to give six days in a row and travel out of the country. I would like to suggest that right here in our own community there are many senior citizens who need help. I volunteer at the senior center every week and I’ve come to know some very nice folks who can each use help in some way. Some need help gardening, some need help getting a ride to the store, some need help with a little light housekeeping or organizing a closet, and some just have a story to tell and need a listener. It may not be as crucial as building a home for the homeless, but I’m positive that it is equally fulfilling.

I would like to encourage potential volunteers to post a note on the bulletin board at the senior center (Sixth and Hanna streets) offering occasional home assistance. You won’t regret it.
