– Gilroy’s City Council will discuss everything from economic
development to its own behavior during an annual retreat scheduled
for the next two days at a south Gilroy hotel.
GILROY – Gilroy’s City Council will discuss everything from economic development to its own behavior during an annual retreat scheduled for the next two days at a south Gilroy hotel.
Friday’s meeting runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6070 Monterey St. and includes the following issues:
• Council norms, including discussion on the length of meetings, how they’re run, interaction among councilmembers and relations with city staff
• A review of the city’s 2002 work plan and highlights
• Economic development, including financial incentives for developers and the downtown area and a city “enterprise zone”
• A discussion on the city’s relationship with the county Open Space Authority, which uses tax money to preserve lands.
Saturday’s meeting runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the same location and includes the following:
• The controversy over transmission towers and potential for an upcoming public forum to discuss the issue
• A November 2003 advisory vote on activating the city’s Redevelopment Agency
• A potential residential blight ordinance
• Miscellaneous items, including fire and police retreats; attendance on city commissions; architectural and site reviews; development standard reviews; rubberized asphalt and costs for candidate statements.
Council will also gather to dine at Mama Mia’s Restaurant at 7 p.m. Friday.
Not all of the topics will necessarily involve lengthy discussions. Because items for the agenda are collected over the course of the year, some issues or concepts may have been addressed – or abandoned – previously by Council.
City officials have also changed the venue for next Monday’s study session on the future of Old City Hall. Instead of the Wiley House Cultural Center, the 6 p.m. meeting will now be held in the Council Chambers at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Interviews for the Downtown Specific Plan Task Force will follow at 7 p.m.
