Tryout for youth b-ball
GILROY – Sign up for basketball league tryouts. The Gilroy Community Services Department offers a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in grades 3 through 10. Teams are made up of 8 to 10 players. Each player must be prepared to play at least half of each game throughout the eight-game season.
Each player will receive a team jersey; champion shirts will be given to division champions. Scholarships are available. Deadline for try-out registration is Thursday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Tryouts are Saturday, Dec. 6. Details: 846-0460.
Explore “haunted” center
GILROY – Coyote Lake County Park, 10840 Coyote Reservoir Road, presents its annual “Haunted Visitor Center,” Thursday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 2., from 6 to 10 p.m. each night. Discover what is “haunting” Coyote’s Visitor Center at night. Play chillingly fun games and explore creepy critters in the dark.
Bring flashlights, warm clothes and sturdy shoes. Costumes and people of all ages welcome.

Apply for Rotary grants
GILROY – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is currently accepting applications for community grants. The Club has allocated approximately $20,000 to grant to local community agencies this year.
Grant applicants should:
• emphasize education and/or youth, with local focus in Gilroy,
• be an organization, not a person,
• have a broad-based impact, and a specific use for the money needs to be designated.
The Rotary Club of Gilroy has distributed more than $110,000 in community grants over the past six years. Applications can be obtained from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, 7471 Monterey Road, or by calling Scott van Keulen at 842-5272 or Jay Baksa at 846-0202. An e-form is available. All applications must be postmarked by Oct. 31 and mailed to Rotary Club of Gilroy, Special Grants, PO Box 1912, Gilroy, CA 95021-1912.
Church harvest fests
GILROY – Two Gilroy churches invite children to put on their costumes for a night of fun on Friday, Oct. 31.
Gilroy Presbyterian Church is having its first Harvest Fun Fest from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church campus. There will be crafts, carnival games, hay rides, a bounce house, pumpkin decorating, dancing, hot dogs and trick or treats.This is a free event for all to enjoy. However, non-perishable food items will be collected for donation to a local food shelf. The church is located at 6000 Miller Ave. Details: 853-3295.
First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., is holding a Children’s Harvest Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. The church suggests “friendly” costumes. Details: 847-6000.
Halloween Spooktacular
GILROY – The Gilroy Premium Outlets and the Gilroy Police Department bring you Halloween Spooktacular on Friday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. Come enjoy a safe and fun Halloween at the Outlets. Kids can learn Halloween safety tips from the Gilroy Police Department.
Free trick-or-treat bags and free candy will be given out by participating stores. First 1,500 kids can receive free glow-in-the-dark necklaces from Erik’s Deli Marketplace (near In & Out Burger).

Artist shares his journey
GILROY – Gavilan College Art Gallery presents “Francisco Franco: Educational Travels” through Friday.
The exhibition chronicles the journey of an artist from California’s Central Valley, to Modesto Junior College, to the University of California, Berkeley, to the New York Academy of Art … and beyond.
Works from each era are included to allow the viewer to experience the struggles and triumphs of a creative journey.
The Gavilan College Art Gallery is located in the Library building on the Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s closed Saturday and Sunday. Details: 846-4974.

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold “Get Your Business Up and Running” on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Gavilan College SBDC office at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., building E. This small business workshop presents an overview of marketing essentials, product selection, legal issues and other concerns of starting your own business. Workshop fee is $20 per person. 1,770 book give away
CASA DE FRUTA – Casa de Fruta is donating six sets of 295 Scholastic books to school libraries.
Enter the name of your school at Casa de Sweets and receive a free fun pass. The pass includes one train ride on Casa de Choo Choo, one admission to Casa de zoo and one bag of popcorn. Limit of one set of books per school and one entry per person. The drawing runs through Friday; winners will be notified by Nov. 7.
Casa de Fruta is located on Highway 152.
