Gilroy – The district’s new schools’ chief starts work today after already putting in more than five days of unpaid work.

Deborah Flores, the new superintendent of Gilroy Unified School District, has her first official workday today. Since being named superintendent May 17, Flores has spent more than five days in the district at no charge helping to fill vacant positions.

Flores spent several days with current Gilroy staff interviewing and selecting two new principals and an assistant superintendent of educational services. She also spent a day interviewing candidates for assistant superintendent of human resources, though no candidate was selected.

Formerly the superintendent of the Lucia Mar Unified School District in Arroyo Grande, Flores took vacation days to work for free for Gilroy. She has spent the past two weeks resting up for the new job.

Flores will have to hire a new principal for Brownell Middle School, a director of student services, and assistant principals at Brownell and Gilroy High School in her first month in office.
