Dear Editor:
The Gilroy Paid Call Firefighters Association held their second annual Adopt-a-Family Program this past Christmas season. The Association raised money through their volunteer work, as well as from donations received from the Gilroy Firefighter’s Association Local 2805, South Valley Street Rods, Gilroy Police Officer’s Association, Wal-Mart, Target and families that helped sponsor these adopted families.
Local organizations, such as Community Solutions, Las Madres and the Salvation Army helped to select several needy families to be recipients of Christmas gifts such as food, clothing and toys.
The intent for the Adopt-a-Family program is to be able to assist those less fortunate or needy families in the Gilroy community who may not otherwise have a Christmas. It’s important the money raised at the Garlic Festival is given back to the community.
This year the Adopt-a-Family Program provided for 18 families compared with eight families last year. The Women’s Auxilliary along with volunteers and city employees wrapped all of these gifts and assembled bicycles at the Chestnut Fire Station. Just before Christmas, Santa and the crew delivered the gifts via fire engine to these families.
The Gilroy Paid Call Firefighter’s Association would like to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to those people that donated money and time to help make this program such a success.
Danny Martin, Gilroy Paid Call Firefighter’s Association President
