Gilroy – The College of the Sequoias Giants left the Gavilan Rams at 1-2 in pre-Coast Conference football action Saturday with a 55-20 drubbing of the home team at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex at Gilroy High School.
The Giants responded to a 3-0 deficit in the game’s first three minutes to fashion a 28-3 lead after one quarter. The visitors expanded their lead to 41-10 by halftime and the scoring ended by the end of the third quarter.
Gavilan will be after a 2-2 mark Friday night when traveling to Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. The Rams defeated DVC 22-15 last season in Gilroy.
“I learned that the kids worked hard, battled hard,” Gavilan coach John Lango said of the setback. “Some mental mistakes led to too many penalties, however. There was only one injury to report, (defensive tackle) Mike Lango suffered a leg injury. We’re unsure about his status for Friday.”
“Our kicking game has looked good,” Lango said of the four successful boots by Castaneda. The placekicker stroked a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter as well as nailing both of his PAT tries.
Schaeffer, a transfer from the University of Tennessee, threw for 294 yards, including three touchdowns to wideout Darius Passmore.
Lango called on Matt Leal to quarterback for Gavilan, subbing for the injured Matt Virus. Leal passed for 233 yards and one touchdown on a 10-for-31 night, suffering four interceptions. Leal took part in both Gavilan touchdowns, covering the final yard on a Gavilan drive to paydirt, then tossing a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Shane Butcher.
The visitors built up 235 yards on the ground, while the Rams, under pressure throughout the 60 minutes, lost 17 yards in the ground game.
Lango said both Leal and Virus will be available against DVC.
