Dear Editor,

“We should go back to the ‘good old days’ where the white Americans lived in the west side and the Mexicans lived in the east side.”

Being a “White” American born in Gilroy and raised on the “east side” I have to take issue with this statement from Mr. Hernandez..

There were many white American families living right alongside Mexican-American families on the east side. If Mr Hernandez did live in Gilroy at this time was he “color” blind to this? I am curious where this statement comes from.

My grandparents raised my father and his four siblings from the 1930s to the 1950s on the east side of Gilroy. My parents raised me and my four siblings from the 1950s to the 1980s there also.

Growing up I never remember there being a distinction of east and west sides of Gilroy. I only remember a small friendly town with wonderful people of all races living throughout all areas of the town.
