Dorothy J. Spalding died in Hollister on June 14, 2007 at the age of 76. She was born in Mena, Arkansas, then lived in Santa Maria, CA. She had lived in Hollister for the past two years and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Her favorite pastime was cooking and sewing.

Teresa Reis Barros, a hard-working woman of faith and family, died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at 7:10 P.M. on December 21, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Francisco (Frank) Machado Barros, daughters and sons-in-law Carmen and Roger Silva of Gilroy and Mary and Robert Barros-Bailey of Hidden Springs, ID, and grandchildren António and Manuel Silva and Teresa and Rachel Barros-Bailey.

Rosalia Arlia

Rosalia Arlia born March 15, 1911 resided in Gilroy for over 30 years and passed away at 98 years old on June 15, 2009. Beloved mother of Frank Arlia, loving grandmother to Mike, John, and Susie Arlia. great-grandmother to Matt Avilla, Mikayla, Madrea, Madelynn, Meghan, and Francesca Arlia. Rosalia is also survived by 3 younger siblings Rosa, Salvatore, and Bill.

Mary Josephine Pierce September 16, 1931 – June 27, 2012

Mary Jo Pierce passed away suddenly of natural causes on June 27, 2012. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband Les Pierce, her two daughters Deborah Pierce and Peggy Pierce-Rudd and her son Les Pierce Jr. She is also survived by her brother Nicholas Ferrero, her sister-in-law Betty Ferrero and many nieces and nephews.

Bret J. Borges

Bret Borges passed away in his home after a long illness on June 16, 2010. Bret was born March 6, 1966 in Watsonville, CA and moved with his family to Hollister when he was just a few months old. Bret attended local schools until the family moved to Hawaii when he was 7. When he turned 13, they moved back to Hollister where he attended and graduated from Calvary Christian School. During his high school years he enjoyed playing on the sports teams and served in the local Little League as an umpire. After high school he married his wife, Julie, and they were married for 23 years. Bret worked as a dispatcher most of his adult life. He enjoyed spending time with his nephews and nieces, baseball, collecting baseball cards, playing golf, all varieties of music, especially jazz, fireworks, enjoyed riding his motorcycle with friends and family, and was very generous and giving.

Walter Walley

Walter Walley, 83, of Morgan Hill, Calif., died Aug. 4, 2010, following a stroke. A native of McMechen, West Virginia, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earned an AA degree and moved to California where he worked as a heavy duty mechanic for Granite Construction Co. in Watsonville for 35 years. Walter, better known by his nickname, Barney, was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 3 and loved all sports, especially baseball and fishing. He is survived by Viola Matranga Walley, his wife of 58 years; son Wayne Walley and his wife, Donna, of LeClaire, Iowa; daughter Joan Walley of Morgan Hill; grandson Jason Barr, his wife Mary and great grandchildren Viktoria and Xavier Barr of Roseville, Calif.; and sister Mary Walley Krysty of Wheeling, West Virgina. Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
