Dear Editor:

The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce 2002 City Wide Christmas Program Committee has been busy finalizing plans for this year’s festivities taking place on Saturday, Dec. 7. One component of the program is Santa’s Jolly Walk, where Santa arrives in a sleigh pulled by Celebrity Reindeer (a.k.a. our mayor and city councilmen) and lights the official City Christmas Tree at the intersection of 5th and Monterey streets in historic downtown Gilroy.

Over the years, many members of the community have asked why we don’t do a parade. We tried organizing a Fantasy Light Parade in 1998, and had just a few entries. Since then, we have tried different ways to attract participants, but had little success. We are willing to put forth the effort in organizing a parade but we need the community to participate.

Therefore, we cordially invite Gilroy school groups, service groups and organizations, Gilroy business owners and residents to participate in the 2002 Santa’s Jolly Walk on Saturday, Dec. 7. We need at least 10 entries to make this work. This is an excellent opportunity to promote your school’s spirit, demonstrate your organization’s service to the community, promote your business and encourage shopping locally or to show everyone just how darn happy you are that you live in Gilroy.

Entries must be holiday festive; use of lights is strongly encouraged. Motorized vehicles are allowed, but animals are prohibited. Complete rules and entry form are available at the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce located at 7471 Monterey Street; office hours 9 to 5, Monday through Friday. Deadline to enter is Wednesday, Dec. 4.

We truly hope that you will join us, along with Santa and the Bonfante Gardens Characters, in sharing the spirit and the magic of the holidays with our community.

Christine L. Filice, Gilroy, Santa’s Jolly Walk Coordinator
