Rotary seeking applications

Gilroy – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is seeking applications for their 2006-2007 Charitable Giving efforts as part of their Community Grants Program. The local club has given more than $290,000 to local and educational nonprofits in the past eight years. For this effort, $32,000 has been designated for giving.

“Rotary is all about service above self,” said Dennis Dickson, member of the Charitable Giving Committee. “We are fortunate in Gilroy to have so many opportunities to serve our community – this is just one of them.”

Royal Flush dealt during tournament

Gilroy – Viola Carr earned the individual honors Saturday at the 2nd annual Halloween Hold ‘Em Tournament at the Gilroy Senior Center.

Carr, third in chips beginning the final table, defeated Shawn Terrill in heads-up play to cap the five-hour event co-sponsored by the Gilroy Community Services Department. A minimum of $1,020 was raised by the 17 teams entered. Proceeds are used by senior, teen and youth programs within the department.

Carr, playing on the Wednesday Nite Ladies four-person team, became the first participant in the nine-tournament recreational series to be dealt a royal flush during the third level of play.

The Four Ghouls, captained by Mark Terrill, received team honors. Team members include Shawn Terrill, Lonnie Terrill and Brooke Terrill.

Jesse Castro, playing for Grandma & Grandsons, finished third. Larry Altamirano of the Four Jokers began play at the final table as the chip leader and finished fourth. Fifth place went to Gina Blundo of the Great Danes. Richard Chavez of Four Play claimed sixth, Santos Garcia of the Four Jokers seventh, Lydia Cano of the No Limit Soldiers eighth, Rudy Lopez of the Untouchables ninth.

The second annual Super Showdown is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 3.

Holiday food baskets for families

Gilroy- The Salvation Army will accept applications for Christmas and Thanksgiving food baskets for low-income families who have not applied elsewhere until Friday at the Salvation Army. There will be a food and toy drive Dec. 21.

Time to apply for Leadership Gilroy

Gilroy – Leadership Gilroy is accepting applications for the 2007 class. The mission of Leadership Gilroy is to develop an informed and diverse group of leaders who will build Gilroy’s future. Now in its eleventh year, Leadership Gilroy has graduated more than 195 individuals who want to make a difference in the community in which they live and work.

The extensive nine-month program consists of three major components: skills training, community awareness, and personal development.

Participants will also be required to complete a community project during the nine-month period. Participants meet monthly, January through September.

The deadline to submit a completed application is Nov. 10.

GHS Grad Night 2007 fundraiser

Gilroy – The Senior class of 2007 is selling frozen Gizdich pies until Friday for their Grad Night celebration.

Pumpkin pies are $12 and apple or berry pies are $13. The pies will be available for pick-up Nov. 16.

SV Symphony seeks string musicians

Gilroy – South Valley Symphony invites viola, cello and contrabass musicians to contact SVS Vice President, John Graham, regarding their Holiday Concert, which will be held 4pm Dec. 16 at the Gavilan College Theater.

To apply, musicians must read and follow music fluidly. Auditions are not required.

Rehearsals for the holiday concert will begin Wednesday, at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way.

Musicians should proceed to the band room (B-7) promptly at 7:30pm.

Conservative Republicans meet

Morgan Hill – Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly (CRA) 7pm Thursday.
