The Santa Clara County Coroner’s office confirmed that Bill Mizner, 52, died in a house fire in north Morgan Hill.
Firefighters found Mizner’s remains in the bathtub of his home at 80 Preservation Way early in the morning June 15.
The fire started about 4:15 a.m., and fire crews from five different agencies battled the blaze until late in the morning. The fire completely destroyed Mizner’s home and a garage toward the rear of his property, and partially damaged the roof of another home.
Mizner lived at the house with his wife, according to witnesses.
Some witnesses thought the fire was set intentionally, and the Santa Clara County Fire Department and Morgan Hill police are investigating the incident.
The coroner’s office did not release Mizner’s cause of death as the investigation is still ongoing.
Josh Anaya, 18, who lives across the street from the burnt home, and tried to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived, said the garage was already fully involved in flames, but the section of the home that was on fire was not adjacent to the burning garage.
Mizner also sent text messages to relatives’ phones shortly before the fire, neighbors said. One of the messages said, “Figure it out,” and another simply said, “Goodbye,” Anaya said. The messages were received between 4:15 and 4:35 a.m. the day of the fire.
