Morgan Hill – Sasko, the Morgan Hill Police Department’s narcotic-sniffing police dog, led authorities to 8.27 grams of crystal methamphetamine during a search Saturday night of a local man’s apartment.

Brian Gardner, 30, of 125-B El Toro Court, was booked into county jail on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance with the intent to sell and probation violation. He was on probation for possessing a controlled substance with the intent to sell.

Police were at the residence at about 9:45 p.m. to conduct a search allowed by terms of Gardner’s probation.

During the search, Sasko lead Officer Gary Smith, his handler, to a metal, free-standing, fireplace in the living room. Sasko sniffed through the ashes and burned wood and pulled out a leather case that was attached to the inside of the fireplace with a magnet.

Inside the case was 8.27 grams of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $800. Smith said there was no possible way any human officer could have found the narcotics hidden in the fireplace.
