Drugs, particularly methamphetamine, appear to be taking up a large portion of recent Gilroy arrests. Here are a few events:

One month after Gavilan basketball player and beloved Gilroy teenager Andrel Gaines would have celebrated his 20th birthday, the man who was involved in the car crash that killed him last November walked free.

Gilroy man to be sentenced for murder this month

The sentencing for a four-time DUI offender and Gilroy man found guilty of murder by a jury in May for a 2009 DUI crash that instantly killed a 6-year-old boy in San Jose is set for Aug. 31. 

Sierra search center to ‘fine-tune’ strategies

The KlaasKids Foundation’s search director will return to Morgan Hill this week to evaluate the volunteer efforts to find missing teen Sierra LaMar, who disappeared March 16.

Police investigating Garlic Festival embezzlement

The $18,000 cash theft from the Garlic Festival is in fact being investigated by police, said Gilroy Police Chief Denise Turner despite the Gilroy Police Department indicating last week that they were not.

Sheriff’s deputy arrested for DUI

A Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested by Morgan Hill Police July 4 for driving under the influence. Tyeler Fleckner, 27, who joined the force in November 2006, was not placed on administrative leave as a result, according to Sgt. Jose Cardoza, sheriff’s spokesman.

Woman wearing surgical mask robs Walmart of prescription drugs

Police are trying to find a woman who allegedly threatened a pharmacy clerk at Super Walmart on Camino Arroyo, demanding prescription drugs around 9 p.m. Friday, according to a Gilroy Police Department release. 

Hearing for hit-and-run suspect continued

The Morgan Hill woman accused of hitting and critically injuring Gilroy High School graduate Joshua Valdez, 22, appeared in court Friday, but her scheduled hearing was postponed.
