Oops! I meant to say 3,000 households are needed to support a full-service grocery store. My source is a former board member of the California Grocers Assn.
Since we have about 12,850 households in Gilroy (45,000 residents, 3.5 per household) this would mean we can support 4.28 grocery stores right now. That need is filled by Safeway, Nob Hill, PW and Costco. We haven’t even mentioned Arteaga’s two stores, many smaller Hispanic-serving markets, about 20 some 7-11s, Quick Stops, mini-marts and gas stations selling food plus both Rite Aid and Longs … all selling groceries. There just doesn’t seem to be any need at all for a SuperWal-Mart whose part-time, non-benefited employees we will need to subsidize with low-income housing, food stamps, Medi-Cal and more.
