Dear Editor,

My heart and sympathy go out to the family of 17-year-old J.R. Adams of Gilroy.

This terrible tragedy must be investigated thoroughly and made right by our United States authorities. Commander Carlos Perez and the entire Playa del Carmen Police Department must be investigated for corruption and payoffs.

The driver of the car was truly at fault – 11 witnesses said the driver of the car had no lights on while driving in the dark, struck and killed J.R. and left the scene of the accident, leaving car behind without even trying to aid the victim.

Commander Perez had the audacity to praise the driver for turning himself in the next day – knowing full well the driver had abandoned his car at the scene, and it could have been used to identify him.

Just how much of a payoff did Commander Perez receive from the driver to conclude that this fatal crash was accidental and J.R.’s fault without even speaking with the 11 witnesses for their version as to what happened?

Until this type of corruption is stopped, there are much safer countries to travel to than Mexico.
