Gilroy – The Portuguese Hall held a parade to celebrate the Holy Ghost Sunday. The lodge’s queen and sidemaids were featured in the parade, as were the more than 40 queens and sidemaids from lodges visiting from other cities. The Gilroy lodge also hosted a free dinner for the visitors, using more than 7,000 pounds of beef to prepare a traditional Portuguese dish called sopas. The parade and dinner was part of a May-long festival and was a chance for members of the more than 75 major Portuguese communities across the United States to get together.

“It’s a chance for the tradition to continue,” said Mayor Al Pinheiro, a member of the Gilroy lodge.

Gavilan College Choir Presents Spring Concert

Gilroy – Gavilan College Concert Choir, under the direction of Phillip Robb, will present its Spring Concert Sunday. The free concert will be held in the Gavilan College Theater at 7pm. The 50-voice choir will be performing an eclectic program of music from Baroque to the 20th century. The evening includes performances by Joey Fortino on the French horn and Ruth Winter on the piano.

South County Residents Testify at Budget Workshops

San Jose – Today is the last of three budget workshops where county supervisors have mulled deep cuts to social services, public safety and health. Monday night, South County residents such as Enrique Arreola, director of Prevention and Intervention Programs at MACSA, spoke passionately before the board, arguing against the cuts. Arreola described an 11-year-old boy who was involved in gangs and became a father at age 15, who turned his life around through MACSA’s programs to become a motivational speaker. Francisco Gaeta, a Gilroy teen, described his own struggle to stay clean off drugs, concluding, “I wonder what will happen, the bad things, if we [MACSA] get cut.”

They were protesting a proposed $110 million in cuts to public health, mental health and alcohol and drug services by the county.

The final workshop takes place at 1:30pm today at 70 W. Hedding St. in San Jose, and covers county services in housing, finance, land use and transportation.

Thursday Tip-a-Cop Event Benefits Special Olympics

Gilroy – California Highway Patrol officers will trade radar guns for serving trays Thursday night, at a benefit for Special Olympics Northern California. The event, which starts at 5:30pm at Chili’s Grill and Bar, 850 Renz Lan., Officers will team up with wait staff to serve patrons and share information about Special Olympics. The tips that officers solicit go to support the charity.

Panel Discussion Presents Career Information

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Workability III Program presents a career information panel discussion featuring several speakers. The free event, from 9:45 to 11am Thursday, is open to the public. The discussion takes place at Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
