Prep Roundup: Dec. 23

Gilroy’s Nikko Villarreal and Paul Fox are off to a dominate start to the season. 
After picking up first place finishes in the season opening Chukchansi Invitational Dec. 13-14, the duo repeated their success at the Zinkin Classic which wrapped up Saturday at Buchanan High School. The Mustangs finished third as a team. 
Villarreal, wrestling at 145, took first and also received the Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament. Fox took first at 152.  
Matt Penyacsek (170) and Mark Penyacsek (182) took third for the Mustangs, while Jesse Vasquez (126) and Lupe Jimenez (152) finished in fifth. Victor Olmos (132) came in sixth for Gilroy. 
The Mustangs took second to Vacaville at the Chukchansi Invite with the difference being just a half point. Villarreal, Fox and Matt Penyacsek all took first at that meet. Vasquez and Jimenez were the runners up in their respective weight classes. Mark Penyacsek took third while Olmos, Javin Aragon and Julian Carabajal took fourth.
Gilroy will be back in action Friday and Saturday when the team attends the CA Coast Classic at Aptos High.

Mustangs handed first loss
The Gilroy boys soccer team’s perfect record has come to an end.
The Mustangs fell 3-0 to Mountain View at the Oak Grove Gold Cup Finals Saturday to drop to 5-1-1 on the season.
Angel Velasquez was the netminder for Gilroy, allowing two first half goals and another after the break.
The Mustangs will break for the holidays before returning to action at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 9 at Watsonville for the start of league play.
