Gilroy – The American Red Cross and the Gilroy Community will host a blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30pm, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., Gilroy.

“As we get closer and closer to the holiday season when blood donations typically decline, this is an important opportunity for the people of Gilroy to help save a life in their community,” said Red Cross spokeswoman Sara O’Brien. “Blood donors are in great demand as fewer people take the time to donate once the winter holidays begin. This Thanksgiving, many families will celebrate with a loved one who would not be at the dinner table without the generosity of local blood donors,” added O’Brien.

Modern medicine has made complex and life-saving surgeries possible. However, without a safe and plentiful supply of blood, no one would benefit from these advances. The need for blood by patients being treated for accidents, routine surgeries, and serious diseases, such as cancer, is ongoing and must be met on a daily basis. Only 5 percent of eligible donors in the U.S. actually donate blood; in Northern California that number is between 2 and 3 percent.

To make a life-saving appointment to give blood at the Gilroy drive, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.BeADonor.com. In order to give blood, you must be 17 years or older, weigh no less than 110 lbs. and enjoy general good health.
