Female wrestler finishes second in state for second year in a
row.
GILROY – Sophomore Vanessa Gutierrez battled her way to a second straight second-place finish at the all-girls state wrestling tournament.

“It was easier this year because I knew some new moves,” said Gutierrez during junior varsity wrestling practice at Gilroy High. “I was hoping to get first.”

Gutierrez won back-to-back matches to reach the championship match before falling to senior Missy Stalley, of Aragon, for the second time in as many years in the finals. There were eight competitors in her weight class.

Gutierrez – who comes from a wrestling family – maintains an 8-3 record this year.
