Prep Wrestling: Varela, Mustangs honored by City

GILROY—The Gilroy High wrestling program has a storied history of excellence, producing several California Interscholastic Federation state and Central Coast Section champions. The walls of the Bob Hagen gym are decorated with its multiple CCS team titles—the Mustangs have won 12 straight—and on Monday night, Gilroy added another honor to its collection: a proclamation from the City of Gilroy.

Christopher won its third straight game Tuesday and now has a winning record for the first time this season.

Christopher and Westmont opened the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs with an all-out battle. 

Prep Roundup: Oct. 11

Santa Catalina had 35 straight wins heading into Thursday's contest against Christopher, but the Cougars put an end to that.  The Christopher girls golf team topped Santa Catalina 257-265 Thursday at Gilroy Golf Course.  Natalie Gutierrez scored at 47 to lead the Cougars against S.C. Julie Santiago shot a 52, Kylie Kuwada a 52, Nina Velez a 53, Alex Granados a 54 and Mia Navarro a 62. Navarro drove No. 17 green to get her first official birdie.  S.C.'s Chloe Corriveau was the medalist, shooting a 38.   CROSS COUNTRY

Roundup: Tabron sisters lift CHS by San Mateo, into Del Mar consolation final

Hanna Tabron scored 20 points, sister Olivia Tabron added 12 points, and Christopher’s girls basketball team cruised to a 51-37 victory over San Mateo in the consolation bracket semifinals of the Del Mar Tournament on Friday.

GILROY—Just hours before his tournament championship game, Nate Schilling was practicing his shooting with his dad. The pointers his dad gave him—keep your elbow straight and get a lot of arch on your shot—resonated through Schilling’s head all game and helped him out his recent shooting funk—not to mention being Oakwood’s leading scorer, too.
