FIELD HOCKEY: GHS wins opener in a rout

The Gilroy High varsity field hockey team (1-0) routed host Sobrato 9-0 in nonleague action Thursday in Morgan Hill.

SALINAS—Things didn't go as planned for Gilroy or Christopher Friday as both teams left Salinas with a loss. The Mustangs fell 21-7 to Alisal, while the Cowboys sent the Cougars home with a 41-7 loss.

No substitutes, no problem. The Gilroy High girls soccer team limped into Friday night's winner-take-all Tri-County Athletic League finale against Salinas without its starting goalkeeper and with no bodies on the bench.

Santa Catalina had 35 straight wins heading into Thursday's contest against Christopher, but the Cougars put an end to that.  The Christopher girls golf team topped Santa Catalina 257-265 Thursday at Gilroy Golf Course.  Natalie Gutierrez scored at 47 to lead the Cougars against S.C. Julie Santiago shot a 52, Kylie Kuwada a 52, Nina Velez a 53, Alex Granados a 54 and Mia Navarro a 62. Navarro drove No. 17 green to get her first official birdie.  S.C.'s Chloe Corriveau was the medalist, shooting a 38.   CROSS COUNTRY
