GILROY—Thursday’s match between Gilroy and San Benito was less about competition and more about friendship. After the scores were tallied and the medalist announced, girls from both sides exchanged handshakes, hugs and smiles; the results were the furthest thing from their minds.

Eight Gilroy wrestlers left Palma High victorious Tuesday night. The Mustangs topped the hosts 57-15, losing only one match — heavyweight Santino Orozco lost 6-4 — and  forfeiting two (122 and 140). Nikko Villarreal (154) and Paul Fox (162) maintained their unblemished records, each notching a 'w' at the bout. Villarrel won his match by pin, while Fox won by fall.  Julian Carabajal (172) had the tough task of facing Palma's best wrestler, Martin Martinez. Carbajal was able to get the cradle in the third period to win by fall at 5:25. Gavin Melendez (108) got a nearside cradle at 1:14 to win by fall. Will Calderon (115) also won by fall at 5:03 of his bout.  Victor Daza (128) won by a 9-4 decision, while Victor Olmos (134) won by fall at 3:45. Mustang matmen win CCS Championship

GILROY—More than 100 people turned out for the 40th annual Mt. Madonna Challenge Aug. 22. Runners came from as far away as Flagstaff, Ariz., but it was the locals who took home the lion’s share of the race’s awards.

Christopher sent three players to the girls tennis playoffs, all of who advanced to the semifinals. Unfortunately for the Cougars, their season ended there.
