In her final Monterey Bay League race Friday at Gilroy High, San Benito’s Vanessa Estrada went out on top. Estrada set the MBL record, breaking her time set earlier this year finishing the 3200 meter course in 11:02.73. Her time was more than a minute faster than North Salinas’ Kyle Almazan.

Estrada was one of 35 athletes from San Benito, Gilroy and Christopher to qualify for Saturday’s Central Coast Section finals at Gilroy High.

San Benito led the way with 20 individuals. Christopher will send 10 athletes to the finals, while Gilroy will send five. Christopher, though, took first in four events on Friday. Amira Barnett took first in the 300-meter hurdles (46.06). She also qualified in the 100 and 200 meter races. Natalia Gutierrez took first in the high jump (5-00) and qualified in the 400 meters. Haley Romero took first in the long jump (17-05) and Bryan Pipkin took the top prize in the pole vault (13-08).

San Benito took first in three events. Including Estrada’s victory in the 3200 meter, the Balers took first in the 1600 meters (Maura Forbush, 5:19.81) and the long jump (Christopher Cook, 22-02).

Gilroy took first in the shot put (Ian Morlang, 48-10.25) and the 100 meter hurdles (Samantha Una Dia, 14.95)
