A car that was left running to warm up in front of a home on Almond Way was stolen, but was quickly recovered, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.

Temperatures Monday morning were in the low 40s, and the owner of the Honda Accord decided to warm the car up before leaving.

Two 16-year-old teenagers, a boy and a girl, who live in the area apparently decided to drive off in the Accord.

When the car was reported stolen, officers responded to the area and found the car nearby.

“This time of year, people start thinking about leaving their cars to warm up because of chilly mornings, and they think it’s OK if they leave the car locked,” Swing said. “Any running car can be a stolen car. It only takes a few seconds for someone to smash a window and get inside. Thieves don’t care if it’s cold because they are driving with a broken window.”

The two teenagers were cited and released for alleged auto theft.
